Is there an easy way to take one shape (let's say a circle) and have it duplicated a specific number of times and distributed evenly along a circle? I tried using blends but not sure how to evenly distribute...

but how do you get it to distribute along a circular path evenly?

first hold down option and drag out your circle, place it then do command + d (duplicate)
then you can select a bunch of them and do the same.

rotate tool. use 5, 15 or 30ยบ
- but what if i have 30 shapes? or 26? isn't there a way illustrator can automatically do this calculation for me?nearestexit

use freehand - it has a sweet multiple rotate tool

Place the object at the top of the circle, then with the rotate tool, select the centre of the circle as the anchor point.
In the rotate settings, type 360/24 in the angle box (if you need to repeating 24 times, for instance), and hit copy until your object goes all the way round.
Hope that helps, or even makes sense.

like drgss said, make a custom stroke of your shape and you can have it adhere to a path. You can then "expand" it and rotate the elements that aren't on the right angle.

If it's just a circle distributed along a line, make a dashed stroke with rounded ends, dash value of 0 then adjust the gaps accordingly.
If it's not a circle, custom stroke as discussed...
