Anyone out there familiar with the intricacies of the US taxing system?
I looked on Yahoo Answers and found all this crap that I know nothing about (Federal withholding, Social Security tax, Medicare tax, state tax, SDI... it goes on). I just want to know, hypothetically speaking, what the take home pay for a single guy living in NY would be if you earned $90k.
Any love?

there is Gross Income (Ie: before taxes are taken out) and your Adjusted Gross Income (ie: after taxes - your 'takehome'). Your takehome depends on a lot of things. Tax codes and regulations differ state by state and also sometimes by the locality where you work.
If you want to get a generalized figure for someone earning 90k a good estimate would be to take about 23% of that and subtract it immediately. That would ROUGHLY be your 'takehome'. That 23% is a high-end figure for federal withholdings (SS, medicare, state tax) - but again it will differ by state and locality.

But I figured it out for you, after taxes, assuming you have no deductions and you live in NYC, you're weekly salary would be:
$1,083.40..thus giving you net $56,336.80 yearly take home based on a $90k gross. :
- wow that's fucked.d_rek
- that's almost 40% of your salary!d_rek
- Fuck NYC!d_rek
- I just did it for my own at the moment, and it's about $30 off per week..but it's ballpark..TheBlueOne
- It's pretty accurate. only $8 off here. I need a raise...tymeframe
- What you need are deductions: mortgage interest, property taxes, children, wife, etc.boobs

Hahaha.. that's the reason they always give you gross income :)
In most EU countries governments split Social Security tax between the employee and the employer in order to blur the picture further - as if made any difference, it comes from the money employer pays you anyway.
I was taught at school that tithe was considered extortion in the old days..
- still is we just have a society working for companies now so they dont gripe so loudly.Iggyboo
