i would say it's the client responsibility, other than that, no idea.

1) Search GOOGLE for copyrights.
2) Download the copyright form (PDF).
3) Complete the form and mail in with your logo references and check.
4) Charge your client 4X-10X the application fee, plus for your time.Done

Isn't stuff pretty much copyrighted by default?
On the other hand, trademarking is something you might want to do and is a much more expensive/ time-consuming process.

copyrighting isn't necessary- as it's pretty easy to prove who has the original sketches/files.
trademarking though is something else- and should be done client side.
