Wasn't this issue highlighted/publicised by Campaign Monitor?
It's not about the fact there are better alternatives to Outlook, but that anyone sending email newsletters is about to be crippled by this cracking piece of 'fuck-you' product development...
"C'mon whoop yeah let's use Word to render HTML emails."
CNTS.

I just received an Email Blast from Campaign Monitoring, funny...
"Microsoft have just confirmed they plan on using the crippled Word rendering engine to display HTML emails in Outlook 2010.
This means for the next 5 years your email designs will need tables for layout, have no support for CSS like float and position and no background images. Not to mention the long list of bugs and quirks that break the simplest of layouts.
Outlook 2010 is still in beta and Microsoft have confirmed they want to hear your feedback on this decision. It's time for the email marketing and design community to rally together and encourage Microsoft to embrace web standards before it's too late.
What's the best way to do that? Twitter of course."
GFY - Campaign Monitoring as well...

the point is that outlook from vs 2007 stopped supporting many of the features (mainly css) that the previous version supported. it wasn't that - like IE - it was holding back HTML email design, it was that in one foul swoop it stopped showing correctly email newsletters that it previously had. the worst offender for my stuff was no more background images supported except the one body image.
