My friend gave me a pc laptop running Vista. I am typically Apple centric, but i'm going to fix this up anyway, can someone tell me what the best solutions for Antivirus or Anti-Spyware software are these days? I used to use AVG and Spybot/Ad-Aware on my old PC work computer but i'm not sure if those are still the best...

Avira AntiVir is free and continuously ranked the best anti-virus program out there. It beats Kaspersky, Norton, NAD32, etc.

Your best solution is to be smart on the 'net.

Norton is absolute pants and doesnt flag up anything!
For years AVG was one of the best but i've had that on my machine for a few months now and it failed to find a trojan horse that caused havok on my machine.
I downloaded BitDefender which is amazing, you get a 30 day trial, i keep meaning to buy it, bit it's a thorough bit of software and will pick up on anything thats out there.
much recommended!!!

So is Avira the way to go for a free antivirus? I had Kaspersky for about 2 years, and now it's asking for another $130 to update it's security for another 3 years.

I bought Panda 2010 the other day and I'm not happy with it. Keeps prompting for Firewall (which I don't want) and sometimes it shuts down on its own under Vista.

Avast. It's free and it works great. Better than AVG.
