What is the resolution of the iPhone? Specifically what are the dimensions of the viewable area in Safari when the phone is in portrait mode?
Is this a stupid question?

As an example, look at my shitty temporary site on your iphone: www.sisuhome.com
I have 2 divs, that are something like 200px wide. The rest is just background image. If the visible res is 320x356, then why don't those 2 divs take up more of the screen?

I've not had to make a site for the iphone, but maybe there's something in here that might help:

Anyone know about a 'standard' zoom-out percentage that might be used for html sites? That's the only conclususion I can think of but have no proof.

Sure doesn't.
I repeat:

I have the answer I think. On an iphone, go to:
www.sisuhome.com/iphone_ruler/Then zoom, zoom, zoom in to the right edge.
In this page there is no content, just a background image. There is nothing for Safari Mobile to 'latch onto' and determine a zoom-to-fit size.
980px!!!

Yup, 320 width is undeniable.
Just wondering if anyone can explain why the link shows 980 (on an iphone)..
