I like that this guy comes on here for advice and that most of you are nice about it.
But Hubb - gotta ask, do you go through old web design books from the late 90s that you maybe got for cheap somewhere, or at a garage sale? The style of that site is so out of date... it just makes me think you picked up a really old book and learned straight from it. Those bevels, beveled buttons, the bottom navigation - I mean you can go in any random direction on the web and find SOMETHING similar that is more modern than this. You really need to to spend some time looking at NEW and modern contemporary web design.
- Noted. I am hearing more and more that Embossing and Beveling is a HUGE NO NO.
Any recommendations for places or books that show Web Design in 2009?hubb7designs - Excellent.mg33

The bevel. OH GOD the bevel...

it's getting better, but all of the elements are still too clunky. The KISS theory is what you need to employ here. Make it clean, simple and to the point.
The "why pay more" header needs to go... badly. It's definitely not elegant. The logo shouldn't be the emphasis here because it's not very attractive - so play up the other elements on the page.- The whole why pay more part is suppose to be a Flash Add Banner. I just threw something on there with the arrows showing that it'll be changing adds in the future.hubb7designs
- ah. sorry, I missed that part.Gucci
- Knowing that... Good or bad idea to have something like that there? We work with a lot of different vendors and provide a lot of different services.hubb7designs

^^ Generally, using canned photoshop filters (noticeably) will get you flamed incessantly.
- Filters... Bad. By hand creativeness... Good?hubb7designs
- sometimes, yes.Gucci

beveling isnt THAT bad... ask Adobe or Apple.. they use that shit everywhere. it just needs to be done subtly.
- which means less depth and lighter highlightsrippedursite
- I hear you. The difficulty that I'm having here is that our company has a lot of information for people, but I don't want to overwhelm people with content.hubb7designs
- there are better ways to guide users to content that don't included inundated techniques.rippedursite
- that is where modernizing your designer's eye is VERY necessary here.rippedursite
- I would really appreciate some examples of what people are doing in Web Design these days that is more modern and updated.hubb7designs

How about reducing the overall number of menu items. Create some type of parent >> child hierarchy within you menu that allows you to display less items while including all of the links.
What are some of your competitors doing design wise? What are your favorite sites?

IF this is not a joke I would start over.

Trying to fix this is a lost endeavor.
It's almost perfect the way it is. So, I would say leave it or start over.

Delete every photoshop effect, underline and change the colour scheme to something a little more inviting.
Delete everything that is superfluous to the message you are trying to convey to the consumer.

H7 - I applaud your effort. And your courage to post anything on QBN.
I would really start by looking at some top dollar sites a and noticing what they have in common.
Art is a lot about seeing.
You are obviously trying to make divisions in the content since it needs them, but i think you are making a common mistake in making them all into boxes with borders and hard lines.
Whitespace is enough to divide one module form another, no need for huge bevels, etc.

is it 1996 already?
- hubb7designs0
I just wanted to say thank you once again to QBNers out there for all your help and advice.
I really appreciate you guys.

Saturated blue and black are mortal enemies! Please consider a different color scheme! I'd also rethink the brand's blue if you have the ability to change that... it gives me the <BGCOLOR="BLUE"> vibe, which isn't good.

It would be bad if this was 1996, let alone 2009.

Install a CMS (Joomla, Wordpress, whatever) and choose one of the pre-made design templates. Then just modify it for your needs. That layout has been done so many times that nobody will notice.
Good luck!
- Are any of these Free?
And which would be best for MAC?hubb7designs - tonnes of free templates out there, and it doesn't matter what os you're running to use them. you just want to make sure your server can support them.dropdown
