you know the letter that you're supposed to give to your clients about the work you submit are your property and they can't steal?
Does anyone have an example of how to write something like that?
thx in advance.

? If they pay you it's generally their work. If you're pitching just put something like 'All works/proposals copyright 'x' 2009'

It should be in your contract and I know you have a contract, right? Look on the AIGA site; they have examples of what you need.

include usage rights in your contract and/or invoice

Shouldn't the contract by signing the work over to the client?
Why would you maintain ownership of something you designed for someone else?

oh its for a pitch.

@ukit... as i see it:
with illustration the artist always retains ownership, no questions asked.
client buys the art/design for use on specified project with specified numbers.
one could argue that's one reason why a logo costs so much... client is buying an illustration with unlimited usage rights.
- and the line between illustration/design is getting pretty grey these dayshorton

I'm with horton. In the event a client wants to own an illustration, they're looking at paying roughly 200% for it. Otherwise, they are buying limited rights which are explicitly spelled out in estimate/contract/invoice.

I agree for illustration, but that standard would be unusual for something like a website design, wouldn't it?
I would expect the contract to typically transfer all ownership rights to the client...of course designer retains rights by default.
