Showing movies in public

Anyone know how one would go about getting a license? Are there any exceptions for non-profits (limited free license, or something)?

There's this place in town called TriArts, they usually do plays and stuff during the summer. A lot of the local kids and sometimes a few out-of-towners participate either singing, dancing, acting or whatever.

What I was thinking was that the space would be perfect for a little movie night... there's only one theater around and it only shows two movies at a time (rarely good ones). Is there any legal way to go about showing a movie here in front of around 20 people (optimistically)? I'd love to show something like Big Lebowski, Eraserhead, Trainspotting, etc. but that's probably unrealistic with all their big copyright owners. I think I'm going to contact them (TriArts) and bring it up anyway, but it would be nice to know if there's any procedure that's small-party friendly since being legal might be high on their agenda. Especially if they were by some stroke of luck willing to open up their space to me for a few hours one night.

Also am just curious for future reference.
