"mythical gods" well I sorry I don't believe in any of those.
Tell me what you believe and I bet I can use your same presuppositions and turn it into mythology.

- If you believe in "God" then you essentially believe in a mythical creature.monospaced

I believe we are homosapiens, descended from great apes through evolution. I believe we are no more special than any other living creature on this planet, except that we happen to be unique with our large brain/body ratio and are capable of complex thought beyond other species. I believe that when we die, we are returned to the Earth as elements (decomposition, whatever) and that there is no such thing as a soul/spirit or afterlife. I do not adhere to a strict concept of good and evil, but I do believe in being a decent human being. I believe that all things can be explained rationally.
I can go on and on, but I promise none of it is based on myth.

So what is fact? Things that are only repeatable and verifiable?
- yes, of course, that is the definition of factmonospaced
- monospaced0
You can't stump me or corner me since my beliefs require no faith.
- designbot0
Okay then within your definition of fact, was George Washington a real person?
And how about death in general, is it a fact?
- monospaced0
Yes, we all know George Washington was the first American President and very real. And yes, of course death is a fact. Where are you going with this?
- designbot0
What I am getting at is, based on your definition, we have no way of knowing if any historical event actually happened because it cannot be repeated, and much of it is not directly verifiable....we have faith based on the evidence that these things occurred.
- we have DNA, which is irrefutable proof as well. It can be found in his remains as well as his descendants. No faith.monospaced
- Way to demonstrate your complete lack of critical reasoning skills.Mimio
- critical reasoning is NOT a strong point of the religious since it would question their faithmonospaced

I don't have any issues with God. It is his fan club that scares the shit out of me.
- monospaced0
That is by far the weakest argument I've ever heard. Nobody would question this historical validity of George Washington. If someone were to tell me that he performed miracles in his day I would call bullshit, but we're not talking about that.
You've got to do better than that.
- designbot0
mono, you must be in denial that this requires faith....based on your very definition of fact there is no way to prove anything in history to be fact. Therefore you have FAITH that these things occurred, based on evidence.
- first of all, that wasn't exactly MY definition of factmonospaced
- monospaced0
Historical facts do not require faith, designbot, because they are facts. I don't need proof that my grandfather existed, because he MUST have. You really sound stupid the more and more you argue the definition of fact.
I still lay it on you to find something about my beliefs that requires faith or shows that I believe in anything mythical.

Bill Marriott, Jr., a Mormon, thinks his magical underwear has saved his life many times. He runs one of the biggest Hotel chains in the world.

They can not be "FACTS" based on your definition. If you say I have it wrong, give me your definition of fact then.
- Corvo20
Are Mormons in anyway related to Elders?
- monospaced0
Like I said, it wasn't my definition, but yours. And if you don't know what a fact is, then we can't really have this discussion.
- George Washington existed. That's a fact. If you can't understand that than you have issues.monospaced
- that's why I asked you to give me your definition mono.designbot
- I think he asked you what Your definition was. I am curious as well now.bump79
- There's tons of evidence proving his existence. Not to mention a body in a tomb down in Virginia.Mimio
- Mimio0
Designbot what would be the point of this semantic exercise? To show how you have a hard time determining fact from faith? We have an agreeable definition of what a "fact" is. I suggest you stick to it.
- I only wish to show mono that he has faith as well.designbot
- You CAN'T because I don't require faith in my life.monospaced
- designbot0
Okay since you seem to be hung up on the George Washington example, lets use another one. Did Plato exist? certainly we do not have any DNA from him.
- Plato wrote books. There were statues carved in his likeness, DURING his lifetime.monospaced

Oh the irony on top of it, as you're the guy who most vehemently attacks the science surrounding global warming in the other threads.

Designbot, how old is the Earth and the human species?
