Hey,
Looking at getting myself a synology nas ( http://www.synology.com/enu/prod… ) with a couple 1.5tb seagate barracuda's ( Which are a great price at the moment http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obi… )
Has anyone had any problems with these and macs, or even any experience with these at all?
Cheers

what's your budget? how much do these puppies cost

My budget really is up to about 400/500 ( Cheaper would be great ) I'm looking to get a 4 bay nas for me and my flatmates, were all on macs and currently have an old g5 in the living room with a couple external hardrives plugged in. Looking to get all that consolidated on to the network cutting the g5 tower + external harddrives out of the picture.
I've looked at a drobo but I don't think I need a true raid system as I'm really looking for a JBOD set up as the files are mostly videos and music really.
Nightmare looking at the hundreds of solutions out there just wondered weather anyone has got a good mac nas set up?

This was my front runner ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Network-… ) but then a couple negative reviews has me question how reliable it is.

I know you said you've looked at them, but we use a Drobo at work and it works well. It's really just a backup/standard file server but I've heard of folks who've set it up to feed data to things like Xboxes and the like. It's also extensible via apps: http://drobo.com/droboapps/

Karl, I was looking to get me a low cost NAS a while ago. I went of the ethernet lacie network space. Its grand and cheap (€150) but I wouldn't be doing anything too intensive with it as its fairly slow. But i was researching a lot before hand.
The synology ds 109 or 209 get very good reviews in a lot of places, and paired with a couple of seagates should be fine. I've read a lot of mixed review on the icybox nas enclosures, either people say they're great or complete shit, seems to be very little middle ground. QNAP also seem to have a good reputation, but the model I was lookign at was single enclosure TS-109.
Would be interested in any other suggestions.

how'd they get their favicon to scroll like that?

Yeah, the icybox does seem to have very mixed reviews!
Suggestions would be great though.I think its between drobo + droboshare or Synology DS409+.

Also Karl, shop around for the seagate drives, pixmania had a special on them recently:

I have a CS407 I want to sell (4x1TB drives, using RAID 5).
I've used DS-106e, DS-107 too, no problems so far.. you can use either AFP or SMB to mount the shares on Mac.

Just in case anyone has a similar question I eventually went for the synology ds 409+, Great read and write speed + bittorrent client and soon to be a much better OS.
