arial was designed by some people who didn't want to pay for helv. verdana was designed specifically for screen use.

@ukit the resurgence of Arial is due to the rising popularity of Helvetica Neue as a primary face i think........at least on my sites.

if only someone would invent a way to seamlessly and silently import font outlines to a browser, then render the text with it - we could use all our favorite fonts that maybe the end user doesn't have installed on their machine. Throw in some custom anti-alias options too...
