Looks the same to me, just has a big ad space...which I actually like, especially for these movie trailers...
- akoni0
just an adspace right?

Hmmm. I see they have the customizable homepage going on, is that most of the redesign?

yeah, maybe redesign was a stretch. they've added in new functionality a la iGoogle.

there is also a tabbed navigation update, the "spotlight video" has new features, when you click on a link in the footer you get a side navigation now. In the subscriptions section, there is a channels you might enjoy section now. Overall, they have added a lot more grey bars and background colors.

I'm sure the new features were the result of many months of planning and user testing.
At the same time, you have to wonder - would it kill some of these sites to overhaul their visual design/ branding when it's obviously hideous?

Youtube are moving forward with the concept of widgets .. the web is becoming less about visiting sites (separate entities which exist on their own) and more about the way we as users arrange content that's relevant to us, to a particular subject or to particular tasks we need to carry out.

^^ my bet is, in the near future you'll be able to add these panels to your own site / google start page etc..
- or just be able to log into your gmail account, have all of it on one site and never have to leave googledesignbyjm
- Is that really useful though? What's the point?ukit
- well - I think the benefit of allowing people to add them to their own site, is that google gets to exist more places********

The killer app for YouTube will be when someone builds a decent third party application that lets it run on your desktop or TV. Kind of like what Joost was trying to do.
- Apple TV?effort
- there's a plug-in for totem (a linux video player) which does just this.. it's pretty great being able to view just the video********

What's the point?? Every web page is the equivalent of real-estate... and by spreading your site's reach you get to spread your message / collect more user-behaviour data and advert reach.

I see youtube going from video hosting to entire miniflash apps...a youtube 'video' will practically become mini youtube flash games apps. etc you can already do some cool things with annotations

Yeah I guess all I'm saying is, there's nothing easier than pasting a YouTube video into your site or blog...so YT already has that capability. I could see some benefit to "widgetizing" it, but not a great deal...
- the benefit is that people visit youtube 'proper' by visiting 3rd party sites********
- in addition to this, if you are a partner YTuber account, you are hooked into using Adwords and generating revenue for Google. YT, and your companydesignbyjm

youtube could look like google for all I care. I never find anything on the homepage. I only ever search.
- once they've analysed data / worked out how much u like midget porn, they'll get u clicking from page 1 :)********

I see no difference

what Youtube should work is how bad their support is for YT development & integration
- free_0
yea there is minimal difference it seems.

Welcome to YouTubeSpace? I mean really, I don't see anything special here, other than an obvious relation to Myspace's layout.
Sure, they added iGoogle-like features....two years after iGoogle goes live?
- but is it called copying when the same company makes the change?********
