So I'm planning a trip to Iceland. Flying over in mid June to Reykjavik staying overnight then renting a car and driving around the ring road for a week. I plan on camping the whole way.
Anyone done a trip like this before? Advice?

Iceland must be spending a significant portion of their country's paltry GDP on tourism campaigns in America.

I think Jeremy Clarkson did it once. Might want to find that episode of Top Gear.

and it's windy as hell and cold. you should hire a car and sleep in that.
get the dodge
http://www.randburg.com/is/carav…- It wasn't that bad, didn't get much lower then 45f. Was windy though. Bring a good tent with plenty of spikes!BK

Just got back the other week. Super amazing trip... highly, highly recommended. Here's some good advice for myself:
1. Get off the ring road as much as possible and check out the west fjords and Snaefellsnes and other less touristy destinations
2. Get full insurance on your rental vehicle
3. Don't stay in Reykajavik longer than a day unless you just want to party
4. Soak in as many slimy geothermal hot tubs as possible
5. Avoid tour busses full of fat old German tourists like grim death itself

It doesn't get too cold to camp in Iceland in the summer. Just make sure you get a good sleeping bag. There are camp grounds by all the main sites. Those are reliable and organized. You can even camp by the geysers! Just don't go with the packaged tour and you'll have a lot of fun. It's pretty wild once you get out of Reykjavik (easy to do).

My wife and I spent about a week in Iceland a few months ago. Loved it - want to go back. I second the notion of avoiding tour buses which means on one hand you'll have to make your own way, but it's not difficult to find destinations. We picked up the Frommer's book; it was basically our bible.
http://www.frommers.com/destinat…Layers! Wear layers! I don't know what the weather will be like when you plan on going, but we went in Spring and although the temperature wasn't that low, it was pretty wet and windy a lot of the time. I had a waterproof shell over top of a good hoodie and that was just fine. Since you plan on venturing outside Reykjavik bring a good pair of comfy outdoor shoes, like something you'd pick up at MEC or REI. Considering you want to camp I assume you're well geared. There's some fantastic scenery but not necessarily a lot of cozy tent spots. :/
So anyway, we spent about 3 days in Reykjavik and maybe 4 on the Southern shore alone so you may be pressed for time to do the entire Ring Road in a week. If you're sticking to the beaten paths you can get away with renting a compact, but camping probably suggests you look into something 4-wheel drive.

I'm all out of frozen peas and fish fingers. Can you pick me some up when you go? Oh, and pop next door to Greggs and get me a sausage roll for lunch. Ta.
