I think Moock's Essential Actionscript 3 book is the most comprehensive. It is very technical though (as it should be), so it's not for everyone.
http://www.amazon.com/Essential-…If you're looking for more of a quick fix, then I'd recommend the cookbook. This is great for specific best practices like... how to create an XML object.

I'm new to programming, I am starting to understand the process, but it's still foreign. I am a visual learner, so dry technical documents make for good sleep. I tried some of the lynda.com videos, but I had the feeling they may have been rushing, not to mention it was like a lecture which also makes for unexpected sleepy time.
- Then you should probably avoid the 2 books I recommend.acrossthesea

"Learning ActionScript 3.0 A Beginners Guide" is good starting point imho. Good luck!

like acrossthesea said, the Moock book is quite comprehensive, but if you want to really get into AS3, its great.
a more basic, accessible, lightweight book is "foundation as3"
http://www.amazon.com/Foundation…also, if you want to get a grip on object oriented programming concepts on a more general level, i would recommend downloading Processing http://processing.org/ and messing around there. the book written by the two creators is essentially geared towards teaching visual oriented creatives how quickly pick up programming:

its pricy, but there are copies (*ahem) floating around the internet.
