VERTICAL, it's pleasing to the eye
- I partially disagree, I think vertical is a good answer for most portfolios, but anatomically speaking, is not more pleasing to the eyeMeeklo
- to the eye, given that our eyes field of vision is horizontal, not verticalMeeklo
- my field of vision is verticalmonospaced
- hahahaha
is this you? http://farm3.static.…Meeklo

It does depend on the site, but for some reason horizontal scroll generally seems awkward for me to use. There are a few well executed Flash examples tho, that work well and feel right.

I like it when you click the image to turn the page.

doesn't matter to me

Like ukit says, depends on the site...
Other options...
Use a horizontal scroller that utilizes the scroll wheel from a vertical scroll. I use it in Flash on my site (it's controlled using arrow keys, mouse wheel, left and right arrows, as well as a clickable scrollbar).
I choose horizontal for a few reasons:
- I find it more natural to read and view from left to right as opposed to up/down.
- You can fit more than one project in the same browser space albeit smaller folio images.
- Allows a 'featured projects' view.Vertical is a good option if:
- You want to go straight to the large image rather than start from a thumbnail.
- Good for using anchors too.
- People are used to scrolling vertically.

side scroll sucks. everybody has a vertical scroll button, not everybody has a sidescroller.

Vertical hands down, PC users don't have your fancy mighty mouse horizontal scroll!

Unless the site's in Flash, like the mimeartist one, any site that's side scrolling always looks a bit odd to me. That Veer one for example, looks like they've just floated elements without putting a fixed width on the page... looks unfinished. Each to their own I suppose.
It's almost as if people wanted to be 'different' without really think how it would work in the real world.

do whatever you like. everyone here will have their pref and argue it both effectively, intelligently and emotively (ok, scratch the intelligent and effective there). just choose one and do it.
