So, thinking about trying to jump back in pretty soon. I freelanced from 07-08 and never had trouble finding clients. And that was only on word of mouth with no marketing efforts or portfolio site.
But I realize things have changed. Is it brutal out there, or are people still making good $?

Usually have more work offered to me than I can handle. I had a short dry spell for a couple weeks about a month ago (no calls from anyone, first time I actually looked for work), then things picked right back up and have been offered 4 - 5 projects a week (turn down a lot of work). Seems like things are getting better (in advertising at least). I'm in interactive/flash animation/mograph....

freelance market is fantastic around here right now. there aren't enough hours in the day and I wish I had the balls to quit my regular gig and pursue freelance more.

I've heard about people having big problems finding full-time gigs, but freelance seems to be booming. I've been getting several messages a week about freelance work, and I'm not even looking. So, I'd have to assume if you put some effort into it, there'd be a bunch of work to do.

Cool, good to hear such positive feedback :D

I never did much in the past, but since the economy went south, I started getting some just in case I lost my full time gig. It's been pretty quick in coming.

it's been light for me the last 3 weeks; some projects, but not a ton. if you have work send it my way!

It's really good right now for a talented freelancer. I work closely with local companies that don't have quite enough work to justify a full-time employee or have let their creative staff go (due to not having quite enough work). There's plenty of interesting projects to keep me busy... site designs, web apps, flash projects, small print jobs, etc.

I don't know how long any of you have been around, but the last recession was so much more lethal than this. In comparison, this is a relief. I know that sounds weird, but here in NY everyone I knew lost their job at one point. 2000 - 02
- Was that a recession? Thought it was jus the bursting of the dot com bubblebabaganush
- it was both. a recession caused by the burst.cuke426

@CyBrain I wasnt around, started working ft in 2003. i heard it was bad.
I don't consider this that bad; it's been slammed for as long as i can remember it; a lull now is understandable and i think this is temporary; in the long run it will keep being rad, as interactive is still a growing industry imo.

this thread gives me hope! i was recently laid off and have since made the transition to freelance work. i've been working full-time freelance for about 3 months now but that gig is slowing down.
i'm a little nervous transitioning into freelance but i also think it could be potentially exciting.
thanks guys.

It was a bit dry for me through out may, except from a few projects last minute, like fyoucher1, I had to look for projects/ work, and haven't done that since early last year.
June has a lot of prospects but nothing closed yet
