What kind of type treatment would you suggest for an album with a bit of an upbeat bluegrass feel... but also drawing on country, rock and a smidge of pop?
- Rand0
to me it would totally depend on the rest of the elements/approach used

It'll be type over a photo of the artist with an upright piano in the background.

Right off the bat my mind went to http://www.letterheadfonts.com/

Upbeat bluegrass?
That demands Rosewood Standard Regular, with a photo of the band standing in front of a barn and swine.

Whatever you do... don't use Rosewood. It's a cheap knockoff.
What about a playful hand-drawn, casual script, like old window signs that were hand-painted?

Hand drawn might be the way to go. Though maybe something hand drawn based on a decorative or ornate font.

there's always the time tested (but somewhat expected) hatch show print approach

just use something from H&FJ
i suggest gotham or mercury, if you want it to be timeless
