I always end up using the down arrow and enter key.
*sigh

I'm sure you do the same, but I always copy source text into a basic notepad editor before pasting in to Illy, to strip out any formatting cues.
This is only really useful when you're talking about a few pages, obviously.

Do it in InDesign, since you found that it works there, and then paste the corrected text back into Illustrator maybe.
- that's what i'm saying... illustrator strips out the soft returns when pasted back inhorton

can i just add... major fcking pet-peeve; people who don't use soft-returns in text to be published.
argh!

just do it in illustrator...? shift + return
- horton0
for the record pasting corrected ID text into TextEdit then back into Illustrator also does not work... converts my soft returns into hards.

I know of nothing that would be useful to you in this situation. Sounds like a lot of manual fun.

WTF same with soft-returns pasted from a Word doc... Illustrator converts them to hard.
i've never noticed this before. seems like a mega fck-up?
unless its some whack clipboard pref, but i've looked over them. if anyone felt like doing me a favor and double checking this on their setups i'd greatly appreciate.

soft returns are not characters, and you can't copy them from one place to another
you have to fix the word wrappng in illustrator
- horton0
the soft-returns copy/paste intact from ID > Word, but not ID > AI.
seems to be an Illustrator issue. ridiculous to think that an editor's work would be stripped when pasted into Illy.

i give up.
illustrator i'm super disappointed. mega flaw in my opinion. what's the point of being this new multipage app if you can't handle basic text formatting. back to indesign for anything with paragraphs.

Hmmm... Illustrator isn't meant to be used as a layout program.

non makes the best point here, stop editing and laying out a massive document in Illustrator now and start using InDesign for this.

ah yes thx i realize the pros and cons of ID vs AI.
i use both very much.
my decision to use AI for this project was well considered. heavily illustrated piece. nothing all that complicated for paragraph formatting. seemed like a perfect candidate for teh new multipage feature in AI CS4.
i realize illustrators limitations with text formattting, paragraphs styles etc... but common, linebreaks is pretty basic.

What about changing your returns in InDesing for a unused glyph then find/change that glyph for a ^n after your copied the text in ill ?

FreeHand always had much better type control than illy, I was hoping they would have worked that in but I guess they have chose to keep illustrator 'type-dumb' as a selling point for ID.
