I have a project for grad school that involves a powerpoint on the topic (that I've chosen) and that is "How Art + Design affects us in an everyday sense."
Anyone have any good suggestion for something to pull from? Would any of Sagmeristers' books fit? Any help would be sweet.

Why dont you just take a camera and walk outside your house and document every brand you see. that's a good start...

What about traffic signs? Those are designed. And without them, we'd all drive into each other all the time. Instead of just some of the time.

Highways, street grids, sewage - all banal, man-made designs that allow society to function.

It's not "art and design" but there is a an ongoing project in Dublin related to Art and Science.
it basically is a galley based in a university in the center of the city that puts on art exhibitions based on scientific themes as a way to introduce the public to complex science.

and topically the current exhibition is called "Infectious"
I think there is massive scope for a similar project related to design - i.e. introducing the public to strategic design issues e.g. service economy, ethics, democratisation of innovation, emerging economies, culture etc etc

"Design Noir: The Secret Life of Electronic Objects" by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby
http://www.dunneandraby.co.uk/co…
focuses more on technology and design, and analyzes our designed interfaces with technology through critically designed objects."Thoughtless Acts?: Observations on Intuitive Design" by Jane Fulton Suri
http://www.amazon.com/Thoughtles…
brilliant analysis of how strategically designed objects are tactically subverted on a daily basis. mostly pictures, but helps to transform the way we see interactions with the banal."Strangely Familiar"
http://www.amazon.com/Strangely-…
also a brilliant analysis of design in the everyday and its effect on us.

if done correctly a presentation of how powerpoint holds back the presentation itself could be intriguing
something along the lines of using the wrong tools for a specific purpose. who uses a screwdriver on a nut?
