Can you think of a good example?

I think it's fair to say that the phrase is a bit presumptuous. Most clichés are, in fact.

Apple is the best example I can think of.
I'd say Ferrari, but they keep making uglier and uglier cars and people still buy 'em.
Lamborghini was mostly design, they don't have the racing heritage that Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, etc., has.

i believe all things are priced fairly as they are what the market will (has) allow(ed) in current economic terms. People are paying what they pay for the range of products available. there are many price ranges, markets, production methods, factors, variables, etc. that effect the bottom line of percentage earned of over of production.
i'm sure in some of the high end art cases sometimes there is a loss, sometimes a significant gain. choice of medium and interpretation can be the bane of some artists. as far as products for consumer retail, more expensive, say lamps or other interior goods obviously take on more heft if not simply strength the higher end you go, the difference between laminates and solid woods or cheap composite metals compared to high end aluminum. I have clients who deal with clients that demand specific approved manufacturers with specific materials.
it is said that the chinese had completely reverse engineered a 737 and built their own setting next to a working model however would not operate properly let alone fly due to the mismatch of materials between the fuselage, supports, wiring, etc causing it to be tons over flying weight.

to add to that, i can't say if it's design or reputation but an example of what i was referring to in my previous post is I have also been told that remington uses an offshore manufacturer for their line of guns sold in walmart. though it carries the same name and model number, the piece purchased from walmart will be inferior to an identical proper piece purchased at a licensed gun retailer
