Out on July 20th via Parlophone Records, Riceboy Sleeps (aka Sigur Rós singer Jon Thor 'Jónsi' Birgisson and his boyfriend Alex Somers) release their debut "Riceboy Sleeps". The project, of which the music tends to be more ethereal and experimental than that of Sigur Rós, has been used by the duo to exhibit artwork and stage exhibitions for two or three years now. Played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland (and featuring long-time string collaborators Amiina, as well as the Kopavogsdaetur choir) it was stitched together on solar-powered laptops in Hawaii.
Riceboy Sleeps began as a Sigur Rós side project around 2003. On November 24, 2006, they released their first picture book with the same name as their project. One thousand hand-numbered editions were produced, and only available in Iceland. A second unnumbered edition was released in July 2007. To spread the word of the book's publishing, Somers and Birgisson held an art exhibition at Gallery Turpentine in Reykjavík, Iceland followed by an exhibit in Arkansas, USA and Melbourne, Australia. The two have released two singles: "All the Big Trees" and "Daníell In the Sea" besides the song "Happiness" which appeared on the "Dark Was The Night" Red Hot compilation produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National.
