anybody know of any companies that makes nice big desk/tables for working on? i've got 24'' and 19'' displays and a mixing console for pro tools that i'd like to fit all on the desk. i'm looking at some shits from Ikea but I'd rather something with more personality...
any suggestions?

Get a carpenter-friend to make you one to your own specification.
If you're not too fussy about the finish, and focus on the functionality, you'll be able to get a great desk for not much $$$.

i was thinking that. i don't have any carpenter friends tho. there's this place around the corner from where i live that makes custom shiz but i'm lazy.

Go to a timber yard or construction suppliers and order a nice cut of an almighty fuck-off piece of wood, ply, panelling, whatevah... then get railway sleepers stacked for the props either end. Looks great.
- nice. got a link to the railway sleepers? i dunno what those are.********
- the wooden timbers under the railsdoesnotexist
- Sorry... in UK sleepers are sold in gardening shops and wood yards but maybe not in US.********
- That said though, a timber yard would cut up tree heartwood/quads and deliver.********

- I'm just trying to lighten a_a's pocket by about three grand.blaw
- Gotta say too - I hate the naff veneer finish on 'executive' stuff like that. Raw, used, hand-hewn wood's the way.Nairn
- You'd love the rolltop desk my wife recently refinished for my in-laws. Acquired from their church, quartersawn oak...blaw
- ...Arts and Crafts style. Really, really nice. I have to build some dividers, misc. drawer parts.blaw
- But old, classy piece of furniture.blaw
- Not that A&C and rolltop go hand in hand. Just that this desk borrows from that style.blaw

Hey Dance, I'm impressed with the seamless image stitching on the panorama of your office... do you use an expensive application to get it that good?

I have this desk, it's one of the cheapest objects at DWR. I got it for $500 because it was an ex-floor model. Still kind of pricey but it's hard to find such a clean looking object.
http://www.dwr.com/product/furni…Failing that, doors do make pretty good desks, I'm sure somebody locally would charge minimum for putting materials together for you

check out the free section of craigslist. I have been seeing a lot of old 1950's 1960's metal tanker desks on there lately. I don't know if its a regional thing but its worth a shot.
