Sample it up 4 times bigger than you need it, even its a stupidly big file, do all your treatments on it at that size ( dust and scratches, jpeg compression removal etc) then reduce it down to the size you need it.
- this helps. try a little unsharp mask along with this.baseline_shift

add a noise overlay. the eye is more forgiving of a little noise than blurriness. makes it look like it's just the shot and is intentional

Horp's suggestion makes sense. I've done a similar thing with sharpening photos. but they were .raw files to begin with.

If you use resample choose Bicubic smoother.
When you resample there will probably be bluring
so use smart sharpen or unsharp mask as basline_shift suggested

just was given an interesting tip from a photographer. convert to lab and smart sharpen the lightness layer. sound like it would make sense?

it seems like blow up has the kodak airbrush engine in there smoothing things, pretty nice
- digdre0
load into illustrator
livetrace -> custom
let it trace

I know converting to Lab sometimes works better with color and image manipulation – but have not used for enlarger images.
try it out and post back!

This is exactly what the photographer mentioned!!!alicetheblue - Interesting. Ill probably have a chance to use this real soon, as i seem to be a magnet for low res client jpgs.baseline_shift
