"Hubbard first introduced Dianetics to the public in April 1950, in an article published in the May 1950 issue of the magazine Astounding Science Fiction.[4] In his subsequent book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health (1950), Hubbard presented Dianetics as an alternative to conventional psychotherapy and psychiatry. Hubbard claimed that Dianetics can increase intelligence, eliminate unwanted emotions and alleviate a wide range of illnesses he believed to be psychosomatic. Among the conditions purportedly treated against are arthritis, allergies, asthma, some coronary difficulties, eye trouble, ulcers, migraine headaches, and sex deviations."
the part i'm interested in:
"Hubbard claimed, in an interview with the New York Times in November 1950, that "he had already submitted proof of claims made in the book to a number of scientists and associations." He added that the public as well as proper organizations were entitled to such proof and that he was ready and willing to give such proof in detail.[36] In January 1951, the Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundation of Elizabeth, NJ published Dianetic Processing: A Brief Survey of Research Projects and Preliminary Results, a booklet providing the results of psychometric tests conducted on 88 people undergoing Dianetics therapy. It presents case histories and a number of X-ray plates to support claims that Dianetics had cured "aberrations" including manic depression, asthma, arthritis, colitis and "overt homosexuality"..."so basically, tom cruise is using dianetics to lose the gayness legitimately.
so when people say he's gay, you can say "no, he may have been born gay but he's beaten the urge with a legitimate system of human improvement created by a science fiction author who created a religion for tax breaks based around aliens ufo's that look a lot like 1970's DC-10's and hydrogen bombs".

- epikore0

I don't have an hour to watch that video, but didn't L. Ron Hubbard come up with Dianetics as a joke bet with another sci fi writer? (Whoever came up the the better religion won or something like that?)
Aside from that I don't think Christians should thumb their noses at Dianetics too quickly unless they want to be turned into a pillar of salt.

So someone explain to me why Xenu bringing billions of people to Earth in spacecraft then stacked them around volcanoes is seen as laughable, yet a man sacrificed on a cross then returning back to life is ok.
If you are a believer of any religion, there has to be some sort of code in your own that says "don't judge other people" or similar.
And if you don't believe in organize religion, this is where you show religious fanatics that you can be better than them by accepting others for who they are.. let THEM keep embarrasing themselves with all sort of discriminating stories.

I like Meeklo.

Meeklo - while I am not a subscriber to any religion or believer in any faith, I think you can have a heartier chuckle at Scientology for one main reason. - We can actually point to a photograph of the guy who made it up. It was a dude whose job was to make up stories about spaceships and creatures and so on.
Christianity actually has a couple thousand years of history, lots of texts, many debatable points, etc.The creator of Dianetics wore a tie and lived in our time.
- I concur. Christianity came out of a cultural matrix. Scientology is just pure fantasy.TheBlueOne
- A couple thousand years of made up shit is what Christianity has, all of it debatable.monospaced
- nearly all of it fantasymonospaced
- Well there were romans and they did nail people to crosses and their was a...TheBlueOne
- ...messianical strain of judaism at the time...so that's what I meant as a cultural matrix..TheBlueOne
- this Xenu spaceship crap is just crap...TheBlueOne
- What you think of Christian 'content' isn't really the point. It's affected millions over a couple thousand years...harlequino
- ...for many reasons whether you bleieve in it or not.harlequino
- but christianity has no prehistoric DC-8 airplanes!vaxorcist
