If I select an area using the magic wand tool, is it possible to determine the actual number of pixels selected even if the area selected is irregular in shape?

You could count them, but I don’t think PhotoShop will count them for you.

interesting. why?
- airey0
you could select a single pixel and grow the selection. then you could count matches on the floor and fly qantas. underware from kmart only.

use the new magic wand tools from CS3

I have a photo of a glass tile with mosaic fragments embedded in the tile. I want to calculate what percentage of the tile contains the mosaic fragments.

The best you can do is make your selection, copy or copy merged if there is more than one layer showing. Then, create a new Photoshop file and the dimensions will be the width and height of your selection.

The selected areas are very frgmented though. The dimensions of the image in no way represent the possible populated area.

make a path of each fragment individually.
or,
use the extract filters.
or,
use masks, isolate the color of the fragments in the channels and mask them out. this last probably the fastest and most accurate way.

use colour select. you can affect the range. you could then fill the selected range with black and the background with white to show the contrast. then though i have no idea how you'd work out the percentages of either.

OK. Make your selection. Go Image > Crop. Save the selection. Duplicate the new channel (made from saving the selection) into a new document. Go to Filter > Blur > Average. Open your Info Palette and check the greyscale percentage. This will equal the percentage of the area which was selected.
