it would only work if you comp the site in illustrator or indesign using elements made in photoshop and placed with a link rather than embedded, that way you'd update the source.
interesting thought though, that would be a great feature to use shared asset files throughout multiple psds.

i only ever use smart objects for vectors i dont want to rasterize in potatochop. i copy whatever vectors from illy, and paste em in ps. it prompts a little box that gives you options. choose 'smart object'.
this allows you to left click the layer and select 'edit contents' and it pops back over to illy and lets you edit and save the vectors. this is great because when you go back over to ps, all the layer effects, etc are still applied to the newly edited vector art.

^this is ALSO great, because the psd embeds the vector art in an illustrator editable format,

I didn't read all the posts, but using the layer comps panel may be a workaround for what you want. You'd only have one psd, but it's a series of layouts. Does that help?
- yeah, it's why they invented comps. still, i'd back that file up regularly. i'm nervous of all eggs in one basket etc.airey
