Recently completed a redesign/restructuring of a clients website, and the index page was made dynamic (index.htm is now index.php). After reviewing some google stats several outside links were pointing to "/index.htm" which was now a deadlink, so i added a index.htm that redirected to the index.php page...
Now my problem is when you goto the site it loads the index.htm and there is a second or two that you see the redirect message. Is there a way to specify which page the browser lands on?

Search for how to do a 301 redirect with htaccess.

Thanks! worked perfectly.
1 more question just for future reference...I uploaded the .htaccess as htaccess.html then renamed the file, after that it has totally disappeared (dont see it via ftp or ssh) if for some reason it needs to change can I just repeat the above steps to replace?
- Yeah, just overwrite it. You can't see it as your ftp is not configured to show hidden files.Jnr_Madison
- There should be an option somewhere in your FTP program of choice. Glad you got if working so quickly :)Jnr_Madison
