I think I may soon join the mods and get myself a Vespa. Any advice?

Don't be a tool and wear little more than an open-face helmet, t-shirt, shorts and thongs like so many scooter riders seem to think is the done thing. Speaking from experience, coming off a scooter is no different than coming off a bike at the same speed - and it's a matter of when, not if. So wear some proper protection, and have fun!

Definitely taking the proper precautions. I'm using it as a commuter bike so looking like a tool comes secondary :D

I like them, the older and more beaten up the better though in my books.

btw... you don't have to join the mods to ride a vespa.
wear a black ninja suit with leather patches, terminator sunnies and grow a handlebar moustache.
start your own counter culture - the pommy bikie ninjas...
- OMG... did I actually post that shit. I'll get some sleep this weekend and stop drinking red bull.Amicus

anyone know what the lifespan is on a well kept vespa? whats the max mileage to consider for used?
- doesnotexist0
aren't those small engines limited to like 10k miles? maybe I'm thinking of something else, but I think you have to get a new engine after so many miles.
- No, it should last at least 30K if maintained, even more. The four stroke engines are pretty durable. Plus, that's a lot of miles to be on a scooter for anyway.nikdaum
- I'm upto 7k on mine and only feels like its run in in the last 500kms. Should last at least 25/30k.JerseyRaindog

You might consider the Genuine Scooter Company's Stella bike. Same design and components, and built in the same factory as the vintage Vespas. Way cheaper too. My gf had one for a few years and it was great. You can totally pop a wheelie on that bad boy. It was a bit small for a big guy like me (6' 2", 230lbs) but I was able to get up to about 55mph and maneuver just fine. Consider it.

haven't any of you been to india, thailand, hell any part of asia that has scooters. If you can't fit a family of 5 on one you aren't doing it right!

- I love how the wife and kids have to do without a helmet.MrOneHundred

- Yeah, the second is a taxi scooter, he's wearing the vest. These all look like Thailand, the first two esp due to 7-11 and the taxi cab.nikdaum

Many vespa's have 2 stroke engines, if the previous owner ran it without the proper oil/gas mixture, you may have issues. Then again, those 2 stroke engines can be fixed easily and by even lawnmower mechanics...
You might consider an indian Lambretta or Bajaj
