On International Women's Day this year, Ctrl.Alt.Shift marched through Guildhall, London, to raise awareness for the 50 million women currently missing in India (equivalent to the entire population of South Africa)

The campaign claims that the practice of female foeticide (sex-selective abortion) has created a worrying gap in the population and the death of women in Indian society has led to the illegal trafficking of girls from neighbouring countries.
The campaign hopes to raise a 50,000 name online petition by 8th March 2009 that it will present to the Indian Government; to raise funds to support 7,000 sex workers in the red light area of Calcutta and to raise public awareness with a flashmob style street protest in London.

wait, so are they *really* missing or are they saying 50 million women were aborted?
Also why are they protesting in london? Don't they know we have a credit crunch here?

this is why it is good that Hillary is Sec. of State. She needs to go over there and kick some nads.
- right because the US is totally in position to throw its weight aroundflashbender
- Right, and because Hillary is so adamant about stopping abortion.Scotch_Roman

talk about short-sightedness. like nairn said, wait and see what happens in about 20 years.

They've got population issues and other problems to deal with as well...

"In order to stabilize world population, it is necessary to eliminate 350,000 people a day. It is a horrible thing to say, but it’s just as bad not to say it."
- Jacques Cousteau
- his analysis of human populations and sustainable ocean resources were largely ignored by the world.zenmasterfoo

massive props on this campaign.
international women's actions are as important now as ever.

why not march through india?
- flashbender0
^^ or at least at the indian embassy. But Guildhall? Why because women who have some money and/or influence will feel bad about their position? Way to support the sisterhood.
- although it will get press, it will be forgotten in a day.zenmasterfoo

Let them deal with their own shit, stop coming and crying to me for your own fuckups.
Fuck social advertising, showing me starving kids on tv around dinner time to try and catch me eating dinner just desensitised me to the whole thing.

This is very sad. Although I must say the idea of supporting hookers is absurd in any country.
I wish *other* abortions happening in *other* countries raised peoples' ire like this does. 50,000? That's a fraction of a fraction of the number of babies that have been aborted in the U.S. alone since 1973.
I think I prefer the term "foeticide" to "abortion". It's a better description of what actually happens to the fetus.
