I am doing an informal survey as things get worse, and recently start to look a bit better, with the economy. I just wanted to see if more people are losing jobs, moving to in-house teams, etc.

any takers?

Looking at it now... does working @ a studio as a graphic designer count as "in-house"?
- Rand0
work for own design firm--which is that?
- Keenan0
I would call both of those "work at agency". It should say, "work at agency/studio", but I didn't create is so I can;t change it.

not to be a pest, but I would love to get a few more responses on this survey. Feel free to pass the link on to friends. This is info is going to be part of a helpful resource for designers/creatives dealing with a crap economy.

I'm a bit put off by the slapdash way you're approaching it and am not convinced its for anything other than to give you a subjective set of reassurances.
For instance, its either getting worse, or its getting better, but it can't be "getting worse and recently starting to look a bit better".

Isn't "freelance" just a fancy word for "unemployed" anyways? Hahahaha.

And then getting to the site and reading this
"Are you a graphic designer? What's your employment status? (Messed up the first one, please submit again.) ”
Doesn't inspire me to devote any time to this.
If you were going to be absolutely honest, would it be fair to say you're a design/creativity journalist and you're trying to covertly generate some data for an article you've been asked to submit to the editor by the end of the week?

sorry for the 'slapdash'ness. This is a pretty informal survey, but I think this kind of industry specific information is useful, especially for those on the job hunt.
Many companies are cutting design/advertising budjets and moving things in house, which means shopping your portfolio around to design firms might be a less effective approach than looking for in-house work. Yes, the survey is informal, but the motivation is to collect some very useful info.

thanks to all who helped out with the survey. Here are the results so far:
http://socialtoo.com/survey/view…
Are you a graphic designer? What's your employment status?
freelance 33 (29.46%)
work at an agency 21 (18.75%)
both agency and freelance 17 (15.18%)
unemployed 16 (14.29%)
in-house 25 (22.32%)

Hang on hang on... I just had a pang of guilt about my apparent feistiness and so decided to click your link and take your survey.
Its one question. Its a one question survey... am I right? Its just the one question about what work status we occupy.
How does that inform anything concerned with the subject matter you outline in your initial post?

I'm more than one selection... what do I do now?
- Keenan0
yes Horp, it's one question, one simple question. Sure, you could go on the AIGA website and get their yearly survey on job trends in design. But layoffs and job changes are happening so fast right now that its worth a survey every month or two.
I know it sounds crazy, but the truth is that the design market is going to be affected by the greater market that is wildly fickle. What happens on Wall Street trickles down to our salaries and job availability. So to answer your question, I wanted to get an idea of how far things have and are trickling.
