Mac file backup

So I'm finally getting around to having a dedicated file/system backup for my MBP. I current have a FW 800 MyBook drive as a second hard drive, it's 320 GB.
I want to get a much larger one for a backup but have a question:
Am I better off keeping the current 320 GB drive, which is the drive used by Logic for recording, plugged in with FW800 for the speed, and put a new backup drive on the FW 400 plug-in, or should i do this the other way around?
Thanks. Also, thought about getting the 1TB time machine but just not sure yet. Can get a 1TB MyBook for much cheaper.

I want to say keep the FW400 for backup unless speed is not an issue, then it doesn't matter.

Well, I've got a last-gen MBP that does include the FW400 port.

you serious?
the last one? is it the 17 one?
because the 15 one with the reflective/ high glare/ poor visibility screen with the black border doesn't, I'm typing from one right now

You can also just daisy chain FW drives together, in any order or connection type.

just get a cheap usb2 external for time machine backup. save the FW800 for jobs that need performance.
and a 1tb TM disk is huge unless you want to hold onto monthly backups for the last 2 years.

albo - can this truly be done? I've read about doing so with a MyBook and have not found conclusive fact that you can daisy-chain them and run the last in the line as the backup for both the laptop and the first-in-line external drive.
I probably don't need to the 1TB drive - My total drive space is 480, so maybe I'll be fine with the 500. I don't back up movies and such, but my external drive has my itunes library, movies, and tons of audio recording files.
In that case as well - if I'm going for a 500GB drive, any thoughts on just getting a Time Capsule?
- i time machine my 500gb HD (prolly 60% full) to a cheap usb2 500gb external. works great.inkpink
- cheap meaning a mybook. time capsule seems like a backup luxury unless you need the wirelessinkpink
- Already have wireless DSL; I think I'll just go with a new MyBook 500, and be done with it.mg33
- Time Capsule is expensive....fyoucher1

FW specs support daisy chaining, but obviously drives could differ. I've never had any issues with LaCie drives, so maybe get a LaCie 1 TB "Design by Neil Poulton" drive and plug the MyBook into that?
