I've read that Cleartype (Microsoft's font rendering technology) defaults to "enabled" for Windows IE but what about other apps, namely Firefox
I have a page that a font (Arial Narrow) is rendered like shit in Firefox. Do I have to enable Cleartype for Firefox?

No, it should be on for firefox if you set it in the Properties > Appearance > Effects > Cleartype... settings box.
- make sure cleartype is actually selected and not 'standard'Jnr_Madison

so is that the default for PCs?

I'm pretty sure it's not turned on as standard but might be different with vista etc. I'm not 100% sure.

everything in cleartype is rendered like shit. what sort of fucking idiot would only anti alias on one axis. You can try and argue otherwise but its fucking obvious that it should be anti aliased on both axis but sub pixel anti aliased on the X

cleartype on Vista should be enabled by default
on XP is just available on exploder7 and to enabling it by default you need to download the cleartype power toy
you can get it here:
