I've never been able to keep to one, but the best I ever used was Things. Still not as efficient for me as index cards though (maybe would change if I could update my list away from the computer, on an iPhone or somesuch).

The Cult of Done Manifesto
1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
3. There is no editing stage.
4. Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you're doing even if you don't and do it.
5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
7. Once you're done you can throw it away.
8. Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done.
9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
11. Destruction is a variant of done.
12. If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
13. Done is the engine of more.

I just gave Things another look and it's still kind of a mess - so many options to categorize (Focus/Projects/Areas/Tags) that work with each other in mysterious ways.
You can put a project in Focus>Someday, but you cannot put a single item from a project in there. But you can have the project in Someday and put it in an Area.
You can drag an item from a Project into an Area, but it doesn't belong to the project anymore..
Perhaps it all makes sense, but feels weird. It should be simple and clear.Checking The Hit List now.

The Hit List is good, but I just can't get in the habit of using it or any to-do app regularly.

i use omnifocus for my computer. i like the idea of omnifocus for the iphone (would be ideal), but the sync is slow and a deal breaker. i use soho notes for reference material, for the most part.
ideally, i want omniplan to get updated so that it will sync seamlessly with omnifocus... and then for both of those to be able to sync to base camp. that would be so sweet. i know there are basecamp patches for omnifocus, but again, not for omniplan.
