I am always hearing of issues with Airport configuration. I haven't bothered with one... is there some advantage to them over a good ol' Linksys etc.?

looks like your wirless set up is not correct.
does anything else work on wirless?

I never got an airport to work right out of the box, whether it was an express or time capsule. Ich resetten müßen, Zeit after Zeit.
I have two working in "extend network" mode and the whole network got shitty after last weeks firmware upgrade (luckily apple lets you downgrade it back). It lost me half of Saturday.
- how do you downgrade?********
- From top utility menu:
Aiport Utility > Base Station > Upgrade Firmware - lets you choose any versionraf
- how do you downgrade?

Reset the telenet or belgacom router for 1 minute

Is on of the computers on internet sharing? This could cause a fake IP and that results in network lagging.

So it sees the network, asks for password and gives you the timeout message? Give us the whole scenario. Did it work in the past? How far is it from the computer? Is it WiFi g or n? 2.4GHz or 5GHz? Have you tried setting a different channel? Have you checked if there are different networks on the same channel?
- no, not anymore, now that orange light is on********
- ..which is the answer to which question? :)raf
- no, not anymore, now that orange light is on

I think you need to go through the Apple Support docs for Airport base station...
Things to check/we need to know:
- Are you successfully joining the Airport network?
- Has your laptop been assigned an IP address by the base station DHCP server?
Need to get those two happening for a start...

The Airport Utility can't find the base station.
No wireless connection, and that orange thing is still on.

I would reset it. There are two levels of reset (soft and hard), I'd use hard, the one that restores factory settings.
