I got laid off in January. Had 3 offers within 2 weeks. I am now at a job that I absolutely love, took a little less money but it's working out in the end I feel.
I also feel that the economy is going to start recovering in the next 6 months or so. Not saying we will be sitting pretty like we were back in the summer of last year, but that we will be brushing some dust off. I think media hype is definitely compounding the issue as well.

not everybody is going through rough times, the rules of the game are just changing and that freaks some people out..and the news just makes things worse - they make it out to be so fucking depressing. I just turn that shit off... my opinion anyway

Guys...
I hate to be the pessimist, but it's not hype. There are some serious issues with our credit markets. 3 trillion in investments disappeared.
Everybody and I mean EVERYBODY I know in marketing/design is hurting. The best studios on the planet are seeing a sharp decline in projects and/or budgets.
Best hope I can offer—entertainment (namely film and video games) seem to be sustaining their profits so far. Also non-luxury alcohol, if any of you want to open a bourbon whiskey bar with me.

If you actually care about it, the NPR show This American Life has a great small series (now 3 episodes) that explain the economic crisis in layperson terms.
Scary stuff.

^good stuff
It's true, it really is that bad out there. There is some very serious things going down that should scare the hell out of all of you. The media isn't making things appear to be worse, it is that serious. They are just reporting on the news, if you don't like it just turn it off.
Out of sight, out of mind.
