I see the next frontier of design in the world of augmented reality. Right now we think we are advanced but in reality it is a pretty crude implementation staring at our tiny screens. Our children will probably laugh at how clunky and hard to use the internet of today is.
The challenge of the future designer will be to create a world that moves seamlessly between the artificial and the real.

Future role of graphic designer? Its going to be laying out templates in word. Dont fight progress just die a little inside every time the formatting changes on you for no reason.

More Powerpoint for failing businesses who hire graphic designers at extremely low salaries to be their copier fixer/PPT maker/code monkey/designer/coffee gopher/guy who takes the office recycling home with him on the weekends.

You know the adobe thieves will never go legit, nor will they surrender their title of "graphic designer" they know how to make tables in DreamWeaver and they're not going to stop.

"I'm starting to think that graphic design is like engineering - in the sense that a good visual designer is someone who solves problems visually."
Has this not always been the case?
I can't think of any reason why the fundamentals of graphic design would ever change. Sure, the way it's executed will continue to evolve, but until we have computers capable of intuition, it will not be possible for machines to produce good design.
There will always be clients with enormous egos who say "well, I (or my daughter) could do this but I just don't have the time."
Then there will always be clients with some sense in their heads who say "Wow, even if I knew how to use the tools, I could never come up with so amazing."
