- Christ, this is almost comically too good of design to be an American corporate brochure.homeostatic

a lot of designers from schweizer schule (swiss school) – for example max bill – or ulmer schule have worked in a context of industrial products (just google that)... and to me, these works make those boring products kind of sexy...
have a look at fsb, they produce door handles (boooring), some of their brochures were made in cooperation with otl aicher, you can download them as pdf... unforunately in german...

you could do some transparent sheets with wire diagrams over a picture of the bearing, etc. get all technical and 'SMRT' on people. Dyson made something pretty boring (the vacuum) and made it pretty cool.

These are all good suggestions. Thanks everyone.
I had a meeting with them yesterday. They are basically leaving it up to me and the budget is totally open... they are doing very well. Their process is really interesting so I am thinking of doing some "photoj" style photography and then some more artistic product shots that showcase the texture and tooling.

I love a happy ending, although I was hoping you'd take the Italian approach and just somehow use a partially naked girl...
I once saw an ad in Marche airport for interior housepaint that had girl in a demi bra and thong lying spread eacgle (in a bedroom with newly painted walls).
Below is a recent ad for their socialits party's newspaper...

extremely dramatic lighting can make products jump off the page
BUT note that some clients freak out demanding a more evenly lit boring representation of their product that shows every detail....
