I have a client who is creating a website to sell vehicles. He wants to show some of the car companies logos on the site, but i'm not sure what licences are needed in order to do this.
I'm pretty sure each company will have it's own terms on this but does anyone know the general laws surrounding this, or have any useful links.
Many thanks.

Fuckit. His problem, if he wants it, do it.

i think the motor industry needs all the help it can get right now.

Not sure of the actual law, but I think if he is selling cars it would be OK

I agree with Nairn to a degree.
Tell him to look it up to make sure he's not breaking any rules. If he refuses, carefully let him know you're not responsible. You're not getting paid to do his research work for him. (I think?).

I used to do a lot of work in the automotive industry back in the UK. It was mostly local dealership stuff (promos, ads, etc.) but for all the major manufacturers. Some of those people have incredibly strict guidelines for the use, placement and prominence of their logos (BMW and Audi in particular). A lot of the work we did had to be vetted by whatever agency handle the national account for the manufacturer. We would design the items according to brand standards, then email proofs for approval.
You might not need to be that accurate but you'll piss them off less if you check out their logo guidelines at least.

From the logo guidelines of a major car manufacturer: ALWAYS place the logo in the upper right corner.
From the logo guidelines of another car manufacturer: ALWAYS place the logo in the upper right corner. And now?
If you deal with more than 3 logos, layout as you wish, you will piss off at least 2 of them anyway.
