any of you veteran freelancers have suggestions on self promotion/drumming up business? working on a new website...and and i've sent promotional postcards before. most of my clients come from word of mouth, but i'm wanting to pick up new clients outside of that sphere. just found out that a bun is in the oven, so i'm really feeling the pinch.

Try and find some smaller boutiques that sub out a lot of work and cold call to introduce yourself, and to direct them to your site. Don't just focus on creative shops. Also try dev companies, promotions companies, pr, etc. Frequently non-design firms get approached to do large programs they can't entirely handle, so they partner with creatives to develop the art. Happens all the time.

send emails to your local agencies, let them know you are there if they ever need a hand, let them know what you can do for them and what is your hourly rate. I normally lower my rate with agencies, as they might keep you busier than regular clients (some times at least).

I sometimes send out promotional stuff.
Dunno if it works, but i'm 'out there', as they say.

Personal and professional networking works the best, hand's down, besides referrals. You would join community business groups (like 1 a week breakfast type). Attend various "mixers". Get involved with local/regional schools, organizations, whatever you "do". After becoming more involved and "social", in a year or so, you may be surprised at the additional work you get.

I'm seconding cold emailing. Look at who you want to work for/with, find the right person to email, keep it simple and honest and send them to your site.
I built my business this way.
