Is it still standard for ink to look muted on uncoated or are there now uc stocks which can print vibrant?
If so can anyone recommend one?

Robert Horne Cosmic Offset takes ink really well. We printed a self promo piece on it for Christmas. Looks well and the colour are bright and haven't sunk in.
More expensive would be something like Munken Lynx, lovely lovely paper, takes ink well but its a bit pricey.

Not sure who stocks it, I think Robert Horne stock it for Ireland anyway, they might do it for the UK too.
Theres also GF Smith Naturalis (have some of the posters hanging up in the studio and they look good) and McNaughtons Regal fo different price ranges.

There is also a paper which I've been itching to try out, another uncoated from ArjoWiggins called Inuit it comes in either a smooth or a tactile. Ive got the swatch book and the colours are great, seems to take the ink well and is kinda similar to the munken. Try paperco.co.uk or paperpoint.com for details.

Are you in Europe or elsewhere? I don't know anything about European brands. In the States, hands down the best uncoated paper is Monadnock. It handles 4CP images wonderfully. Other strong choices are Mohawk Superfine or Navajo, Smart Pegasus, Strathmore, any higher-end Neenah paper...
Any premium uncoated will yield vibrant color. Even a cheaper sheet, really anything better than a commodity grade, will work as well. Too much of a tooth (anything rougher than an eggshell finish) will make it more challenging for smooth, strong color.
Your printer will have to run his inks stronger in order to get good results, but anyone who knows their ass from their elbow in printing can take care of you there.
- Yeah, I printed a piece on Monadnock Dulcet and it came out beautifully.Josev

- I haven't had a chance to use Mohawk yet but I did throw in some samples on a problem job (that I was printing on Finch Fine) and the Mohawk looked so much better than the Finch.Josev

Monadnock FTW.
I toured their paper mill this last summer and was blown away with their quality. Simply amazing.
