can someone provide a breakdown of these genres?
techno... house... acid house... trance... electro house... etc?
could you provide an example of an artist or 2 for each of these genres?
i mean, what about: Underworld, Justice, Trentemoller, Orbital, Aphex Twin, Chemical brothers? where would you place them?

right, but there is people that are more into music than others, and decide to navigate into more obscure waters, and in order to discover music new sounds, you kinda need to know your way around the menu.- why do you need to know your way around? surely getting lost is going to give ...23kon
- .. much more random paths and you'll come across much more obscure stuff?!23kon
- in order to know where to get it?
what do you meanMeeklo - do go just go downtown without knowing where on a sunday, just for find out that the good act happened yesterday across the street? hahaMeeklo

go to beatport.com and look through the genres there..
There are more tracks that occupy 2 or 3 of these narrow definitions than there are tracks that are specifically one type, to be frank.

"electronica"
I hate that word. Invented by the media in the late 90s to try to market electronic music to the masses.
Most of the bands you mentioned draw elements of all these genres, so they are not too easily classified.
- You talk like electronic music should have some kind of elitist position beyond classification.********
- I just think people get to hung up on these labels and genresukit
- and thank to the masses that support it, today we have a full blown genre to expereinceMeeklo
- Yeah - mostly the electronic music fans...!********
- that gets to make a living doing music with non traditional elements.Meeklo
- hahaaha at mothMeeklo
- @ moth... huh? i don't think any musician wants there music to be pinned to a specific genrehorton
- well, its usually the audience the one that places it into a category, or at least sub-categoriesMeeklo
- You talk like electronic music should have some kind of elitist position beyond classification.

i like the discogs.com approach; artists fall under very broad "genre" followed by multiples styles per album.
allmusic i find a little cheesey.

btw, this kinda smells like an uber thread.

there's a pretty good bbc doc series that breaks it down into categories and follows the history with examples etc. probably on google video.

- thats probably the one i was thinking of...does this get into techno as well as house?KwesiJ

I think the insane amount of electronica genres stems from the drug idled loon type of anal musical dissection approach of listening to it.
- Yes - but no one uses them.********
- i dohorton
- All those eletronica ones though - constant usage.********
- Wagnerian rock? Really?********
- woops i was late. that list is incomplete tho -- where's Hair Metal?vespa
- vespa0
all music is like this moth. you should hear my band fighting about rock genres. talking about music is like dancing about architecture, etc etc
- KwesiJ0
record labels and marketing does not help keeping the genres simple either
- vespa0
it's because everyone needs a new genre for hype purposes.
- maximillion_0
^ very true.
Mr Shoegaze
- horton0
and to add to that, i kinda like how many subgenres can be very much attached to a certain period in the history of music... they can have more relevance than just a description of sound.
electronica > to me is very descriptive of the mid to late 90's.
grunge > is early 90's.
new wave > should be exclusive to the early 80's
etc etc.

The British press is the worst at this. A couple months ago, I saw a couple story where they said the next big thing would be "grindie" - a mix of grime and indie.
Needless to say that one didn't quite take off:)
- grindie was 2006! my band got remixed by a grindie producer for our bside, it sounded pretty.. bsidevespa
