Region 1 vs Region 2 right? If I want to buy a DVD for a friend in the UK (I'm in the US) then I should buy it Region 2? Or do most players play both these days?

Depends — check what make/model his player is. Most can be hacked to play any region. Worth having a look on some forums. Region 2 is uk though.

Cool. Thanks. I was hoping to surprise them with the DVDs but it looks like the DVD I want to buy is only available in Region 1. So I guess I'll have to ask.

dvdcompare.net is quite good for finding films available by region (good for checking disc extras too). Horrible looking site but useful!
- The DVD I'm looking for ain't on that craptastic site, but thanks for the suggestion.CincodeMayo

buy it. rip it. burn it, region free. then you have a back up in case the region 1 isn't working. only bad thing. i looks like a used gift. lol.
