From what I understand, type designers don't make money selling fonts commercially to designers. They make their money selling custom type to corporations, etc...
Don't know if that answers your question or not...

They license fonts to softwares. Several times and for many different faces, small amounts but multiple times.

The percentage I've heard from a few foundries is about 15-20 % for the typographer/designer, the rest is kept by the foundry.
