So I have a PSD file I'm bringing into AE. When I update the PSD file, does the imported file automatically update or do I have to do something to see the new PSD file in AE? If I close and open the AE project, i see the new PSD, but there's got to be a better way to make this work.

It should. But reimport the PSD to be safe. Or just reimport the revised PSD layers.

Make sure you've saved the PSD after the changes have been made.. Go to the file browser in AE, selecet the PSD or all the layers of it that you want to update, right or control click and select "reload". Make sure you've saved the PSD after the changes have been made.
