I don't know much about digital photography in general or those two lenses in particular, but I do know that I'd choose a fixed lense over a zoom lense any day of the week.
full-frame camera?
get the sharpest/fastest one at the most decent price.....

That's exactly the question.
The 35 mm is a fixed lense, and teh other a zoom lense, but of the L series.
so i suppose the 16-35mm lense IS better even though it's a zoom, but is it really worth to pay 5 times the price for it?And no, it's not a full frame camera - it's a 350D, i previously used with a sigma zoom. I thaught it's time to invest in one or two lenses.

i should point out that with digital a 35mm on digital really reacts like a 40mm on a traditional camera. do you need the f/2.0 because if you went up to something like a f/3.5 that should off set your price significantly.

canon aps is 1.6x the zoom = 56mm

Without a doubt, I'd go for the 35mm lens although I'd be wanting it as a pseudo replacement for a true 50mm lens, its close enough and its relativley fast.

that was my intention, to have a "normal" lense around 50mm.
i am not sure about the f/2.0 but i guess the price difference between f/1.4 and f/2.0 is far bigger than between f/2.0 and f/3.5, so it's ok.i think i'll go for the fixed lense.
Thanks all!

good luck,
also with 1000+ euros you'll be saving you could get a pretty nice mamiya or hasselblad and completely fall in love with film and start hating all your digital equipment
that, or you could just put it in a bank or spend it on alcohol and cigarettes

I own the 16 - 35 lens and can recommend it. I prefer L over regular lenses. You can tell the difference.

for the price of the 16-35mm f2.8L you can get a 17-40mm f4L AND a 35mm f/2.0.

Why not get the 17-40 f/4 L for £400 (got mine about 3 days ago). Obviously not as quick but may be a good option depending what you need it for?

L series lens are always FTW~! but it really depends on your use. the 35mm f/2.0 is an awesome prime lens for across the table type shots unlike the 50mm you'll find yourself in tight places.
Which is where the 16-35 is useful. so ya if you got the money just get both :D
