I want to get a light meter for my Mamiya
I contemplated on getting a AE prism but now considering getting a light meter.
Which is good to get?
I was thinking of getting light meter which can do spot metering. Is this worth it? I would be doing more outdoor at night and wont be able to walk to subject and take light values. Also there are some light meters out there for digital use, would this be ok for film use? I would be shooting only film.

So does this work as others with finder, where I just point to determine light or do I have to walk to the subject?

most lightmeters measure incoming and reflecting light.
you either hold the meter close to the subject (or in a similarly lit place) or you unscrew the white on top and measure how much light comes in (usually at a 70 degree angle or so)

you can try to get an old one, i have a lovely (non-flashmetering) gossen lunasix three, but unfortunately the batteries are no longer available.
I wouldn't spend too much money if you're not gonna use the meter in a studio with flashes. most cheaper, non-flash, meter do a very decent job.
good luck
- Thanks again. I am new to film so I am trying to figure out what to do with out onboard AE********

What do you think of this?

i've worked with second hand 10 dollar lightmeters that did a fine job
now I have a gossen digisix which works great (mainly because I want to measure flash light)

l-308 sekonic
pretty affordable, can do both reflective and ambient.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/imag…
L-758 sekonic, Expensive, but a total workhorse, do spot incident, can place exposures in memory and then average the exposures..
but 450dollars.When I started, I got this one
Minolta v f. It lasted me a long time, incident, reflective, flash, did it all.. I think it goes for 200 or 300.
