What format does it have to be on the ipod?

yeah i tried, dragging from Music to Ipod nothing

Also, if you want to put stuff on there manually tick the box which says something like "allow me to manage my ipod music manually"

it can be almost any format. How do you have your ipod set up in iTunes? You can specify all music or selected playlists to be uploaded to your ipod in which case you cant drag and drop. If you set the option to manually manage your ipod you can drag and drop.
