phones vs computers

The announcement that there will be an iphone nano this week has got me wondering...

In volume of sales globally, Apple must now ship thousands of percent more handheld comms devices than traditional computers.

The manufacturing overheads of iphones, iphone nanos, ipods and itouches must be minimal compared to the overheads from producing computers... smaller, cheaper componentry, less moving parts, standardised parts easier cheaper shipping and storage.

The consumer base for these domestic products must surely dwarf the consumer base for pro computers, and apart from innovation-obsolesence they last for many years, wheras the refresh rate on a handheld is probably 12-18 months.

So, I wonder how long it will be before the Apple accountants and shareholders come to the conclusion that they can crank up profits by dropping the 'traditional computer' arm of the business?

as things get smaller, they get more expensive to make. all other things being equal, a laptop will be more expensive than equivalent desktop, and a mobile can't even approach the same power at such a small size. the refresh rate on mobiles is also slowing down drastically, people aren't updating as often.

Anyone else signed up for the Apple product-testing volunteer scheme yet?

You apply and they send you the new gear to try out and give them feedback. It's a big form to fill in but worth it.

Hold on, i'll find the link ...
