It's funny, lately, in terms of my band and being a musician, I have this problem with tricking myself into thinking I'm already too old for all this. But then I punch myself in the face.
I thought about it last night, trying to get my band motivated, really work hard at it this year, make a good new album, get good shows and press, and so on. And I hit on something - I'm jealous of the early 20s kids in bands that just have it all in front of them, that innocence of making music with so little pretension and so little sense of "this is the way it must be done," that open drive of just making a song and loving it and not worrying about what follows.
In contrast though, being 31, there's a ton I've learned about all this, things I and we can do that they couldn't, more money available, more smarts for making decisions and plotting a course, being tactful. I'm the planner of our band and like plenty of other musicians I wake up every day wishing I could figure out the perfect way to get as far as possible with it - give up my working life, play to huge crowds, see the world, etc.
So I thought last night - keep doing it this way - but do so in the mindset of late teens/early 20s again with that blistering enthusiasm for just making a song and loving to play it over and over and over and feed off of how great it is to get in a room or on a stage and hear a song come to life. Figure out how to tell the stories I could have told back then if I were a singer and lyric writer (I only played guitar at that age). Tap into that THING that just makes it perfect for me.
- "that innocence of making music with so little pretension "? Huh. I find pretension is rampant at that age. You lose the pretension s you age...TheBlueOne

It is a typical cycle that happens with creatives. There is no avoiding it. Sometimes it just takes time to get over it. Don't force trying to get out of it, that seems to make it worse for myself and I just become more jaded. Just let go, breathe and be aware there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

"Was I bored? No, I wasn't fuckin' bored. I'm never bored. That's the trouble with everybody - you're all so bored. You've had nature explained to you and you're bored with it, you've had the living body explained to you and you're bored with it, you've had the universe explained to you and you're bored with it, so now you want cheap thrills and, like, plenty of them, and it doesn't matter how tawdry or vacuous they are as long as it's new as long as it's new as long as it flashes and fuckin' bleeps in forty fuckin' different colors. So whatever else you can say about me, I'm not fuckin' bored. "

I think there is an opportunity for a lot of people in the so-called creative industry to put 2009 to very good use. There is no doubt that across the board none of us are going to be quite so firmly shackled to our vocational obligations for as many hours of the day as we are used to.
I really think a downturn is also chance to grow in new directions and anyone who sits around bemoaning the lack of work or the lowered income is a fool who failed to recognise this opportunity.

Trying easing off on the word 'somewhat' when expressing your inner angst. It wont help you any, but you'll sound like less of a cunt.

It has occured to me lately that I have become a little stale in the last year or two, my previous passion for art, music, martial arts and cooking has somewhat dimished. I still practice and enjoy all of the above but its just occured to me that the fire has gone out somewhat. its just become routine rather than the wonder it all used to hold for me. Funny though how this realisation has almost brought the fire back somewhat.
What are your passions and how do you express and enjoy them?
Would really like to hear some of your thoughts!
